Short Oil Alkyd    

Short oil alkyds are characterized by having less than 40% oil content. These types of resins are usually cut in aromatic or oxygenated solvents and have very limited compatibility with aliphatic solvents. Short oil alkyds are almost exclusively used for industrial finishes. Most short oil alkyds can be crosslinked with melamine or urea resins via the alkyd hydroxyl functionality.

Properties:

For Air Dry/Force Dry Finishes

  • Tack free times of 1-3 hrs for air drying
  • Good combination of hardness and flexibility
  • Can be used in brush or spray applications
  • Good durability and gloss retention
  • Limited use for baking finishes due to low hydroxyl functionality

For Baking Finishes

  • Good combination of hardness & Flexibility
  • Good abrasion resistance
  • Good humidity and salt spray resistance when crosslinked
  • Better chemical resistance than air dried finishes
